Module 1 — Welcome & Homeopathy Basics
Homeopathy rests on a handful of guiding principles. You do not need to agree with them to understand them — and understanding them is what lets you read remedy descriptions and follow conversations about the topic.
1. “Like may help like”
The central idea (in Latin, similia similibus curentur) is that a substance which produces certain symptoms in a healthy person is chosen, in tiny diluted form, for someone showing a similar overall pattern. For example, chopping onions can make eyes water and noses run, so a remedy made from onion (Allium cepa) is traditionally associated with those watery, runny symptoms.
2. The “minimum dose” and dilution
Homeopathic remedies are made by repeatedly diluting a starting substance in water or alcohol and shaking it vigorously at each step — a process practitioners call “potentization” or “succussion.” Homeopaths believe this makes a remedy gentler while keeping its usefulness. Critics point out that many remedies are diluted so far that little or none of the original substance remains, which is a key reason mainstream science is skeptical. Both views are worth knowing.
3. Treating the whole person
Homeopaths traditionally choose a remedy based on the whole picture of a person — not just one symptom, but mood, energy, what makes them feel better or worse, sleep, appetite, and temperament. This is why two children with the “same” sniffle might, in this tradition, be matched to different remedies.
Understanding the reasoning is different from endorsing it. This course helps you understand — and always points you back to your doctor for anything that matters.
4. Individual response
The tradition emphasizes that people respond individually, and that gentle observation matters more than rushing. In practice, for a parent, that “slow down and observe” mindset can be genuinely useful — as long as observing never replaces getting real medical help when it is needed.
Good to know: Key takeaway: homeopathy chooses a diluted substance to match a person’s overall symptom pattern, aiming to be gentle. Whether or not the science supports it, knowing these ideas lets you read and understand any remedy description.
Safety note: This is background knowledge, not instructions to treat anyone. Never use these ideas to diagnose or to delay proper medical care for your child.
